Manual Osteopathy

Nose Creek is excited to announce the addition of accomplished Osteopath Dr. Salma Mitha to our team! Dr. Mitha brings a plethora of experience, knowledge and passion to our Thorncliffe clinic, and we are proud to have her working with us.

Dr. Mitha specializes in Manual Osteopathy, therapy which is suitable for all ages – especially children going back to school with heavy backpacks that can cause spinal curvatures and injuries. Below, Dr. Mitha details what Manual Osteopathy is, how it differs from more common therapies and how it can benefit you.

What Is Manual Osteopathy?

Manual Osteopathy (MO) is a technique that mobilizes spinal and joint complex segments in a specific and gentle maneuver using the philosophy of achieving full range of motion in a client’s care.

How Does Manual Osteopathy Differ From Chiropractic Therapy?

Chiropractic care normally entails a high velocity, low amplitude manipulation in achieving the goal of full range of motion (ROM). Clients who are contraindicated to this technique and/or prefer a method encompassing more of the body’s use in achieving mobility may gravitate towards the Manual Osteopathy approach.

What Treatment Modalities Does Manual Osteopathy Use?

Manual Osteopathy is defined by four in depth and established techniques that can be used either in combination with one another, or independently of each other, depending on the client’s goal and existing complaints. All four techniques target various aspects, and have proven to be an effective way of addressing the joint and spinal segments in correlation to the surrounding tissue.

Manual Osteopathy Techniques Include:

1. Lensen or Mechanical:

Biomechanical centered treatment with restoration of movement on specific segments and areas.

2. Advanced Fascia:

This technique focuses on addressing the healing phases of connective tissue. Injury brings about inflammation within the body; and if injury is sustained without treatment, scar or adhesive tissue can often form. Advanced fascia is responsible for bringing increased oxygen, circulation and improving the strength of bonds between the fascia as healing of directional fibers takes place on a microscopic level

3. Craniosacral:

The central nervous system is composed of the spinal cord and brain. Within the craniosacral system is a rhythm that the body adheres and honours in its function. Improving balance on a microscopic and in turn macroscopic level allows the mind and body to restore connection where communication has been lost. Craniosacral technique is a very well established technique in achieving lifestyle change and psychological acknowledgement of injury during treatment phases.

4. Visceral Manipulation:

In the inherent movement of organs, every organ has a nerve, every nerve exits the spinal cord and every spinal cord segments has an associated peripheral innervation, thereby addressing the inter/intra communication/surrounding musculature, emotional healing. As described by Osteopaths Jean Pierre Barral and Pierre Mercier, “We manipulate to the point where the body can take over in order to achieve self correction, not to force a correction on the body”.

What Does A Manual Osteopathy Treatment Look Like?

A typical Manual Osteopathy treatment uses the following treatment “timeline”:

  • 1
    Gentle and assertive movements
  • 2
    Interactive
  • 3
Targeting all aspects of the body and balance of the client
  • 4
    Restoring mobility
  • 5
Using techniques that match the client’s needs and responses
  • 6
It all comes down to using hands!

How Can Manual Osteopathy Help You?:

Reaching optimum health is a very important goal of Nose Creek Physiotherapy. Encompassing an additional treatment that can restore function and improve movement both on a microscopic and global manner will often help the healing process and allow new goals of the client to be achieved.

We here at Nose Creek provide our clients with all aspects of healing, including muscle strength and range, reducing inflammation, and introducing movement and mobility to areas affected acutely or chronically by injury.

The techniques encompassed within the Manual Osteopathy treatment utilize a combination applied technique via an individualized approach with specific care towards removing impediments within the central nervous system (CNS), connective tissue inflammation (CNI), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and visceral mechanical manipulation (VMM).

Who Is A Good Candidate For Manual Osteopathy?

Anyone from geriatric care to pediatric care, or anyone who has ever had an injury, past or present, and feels any aspect of their mind or body is not optimal and wishes to try a technique that encompasses all aspects of the body is an ideal candidate for this treatment.

Great success has been seen with headaches, low back pain, children’s headaches or growing pains, digestive difficulties, TMJ problems, sleep disruptive and/or difficulty staying or falling asleep, post surgical movement and stationary lifestyle due to pain.
