What Do Injured Elite Athletes And Weekend Warriors Have In Common, Regardless Of Their Sport?
When injured they all have to figure out how to heal, get fit, and stay fit so they can keep Enjoying Their Sport and being active
If you’ve recently developed a sports injury or if you’ve been suffering with an injury for a while - it can be very tempting to pass it off as “nothing serious” and simply “put up with it” and carry on as best you can.
It can be very easy to get frustrated and end up feeling “stuck”, wondering if you’ll ever be able to get back to playing your sport or keeping active like you used to…
If that’s happening to you, you’re not alone - we see people going through this all the time. In fact, we see people living with an injury from sports or exercise in our Beddington clinic throughout the year.
I spent over 25 seasons working in amateur sports, so I’ve seen most types of sport injury and know how to help people recover from them. In the beginning I asked you what do elite athletes and weekend warriors have in common. Now I ask what is different about them. Why do elite athletes get back to their chosen sport faster? The answer is timing. When elite athletes get injured their treatment starts the day of injury or the NEXT DAY.
That is not the way most people respond to their sport injury, and is also why so many people suffering with a sport injury are asking:
“It’s Been Months Now - Why am I still suffering with an Injury that’s preventing me From Being Active and Playing My Favourite Sport?”...
Most people think they’ll be able to return to their sport or exercise after a few days’ rest only to find when they do go back they’re still restricted. Sometimes their condition is worse than when they were first injured. Often when you rest there is little if any pain - but as soon as you start up again, the pain returns and regardless of the amount of rest improvement is minimal.
Another common occurrence we see in our Physiotherapy Clinic is people who have seen their doctor, they receive the prescription of:
Four weeks later they return with no relief, only to be told more rest, and a stronger prescription of meds.
The problem with sport injuries like hamstrings, ankle sprains, runner's knee etc., - complete rest is rarely the best advice.
It’s easy to become frustrated and confused because you’ve been told different things, by different people. Maybe you think you have a back problem - but it’s actually your hip causing the problem.
Sport injuries can be very confusing because more often than not, where the pain is coming from, isn’t actually the area that needs to be fixed and worked on and if you rest for too long, other parts of your body become just as, if not more problematic!
The confusion over “resting” often prevents people from seeking out the needed treatment to repair their injury and get back to their prior injury self. Worse, many people just give up, believing ‘they just have to accept their days of being active are over.
