Sports Injury - Nose Creek Sport Physiotherapy

What Do Injured Elite Athletes And Weekend Warriors Have In Common, Regardless Of Their Sport?

When injured they all have to figure out how to heal, get fit, and stay fit so they can keep Enjoying Their Sport and being active

If you’ve recently developed a sports injury or if you’ve been suffering with an injury for a while - it can be very tempting to pass it off as “nothing serious” and simply “put up with it” and carry on as best you can.

It can be very easy to get frustrated and end up feeling “stuck”, wondering if you’ll ever be able to get back to playing your sport or keeping active like you used to…

If that’s happening to you, you’re not alone - we see people going through this all the time. In fact, we see people living with an injury from sports or exercise in our Beddington clinic throughout the year.

I spent over 25 seasons working in amateur sports, so I’ve seen most types of sport injury and know how to help people recover from them. In the beginning I asked you what do elite athletes and weekend warriors have in common. Now I ask what is different about them. Why do elite athletes get back to their chosen sport faster? The answer is timing. When elite athletes get injured their treatment starts the day of injury or the NEXT DAY.

That is not the way most people respond to their sport injury, and is also why so many people suffering with a sport injury are asking:

“It’s Been Months Now - Why am I still suffering with an Injury that’s preventing me From Being Active and Playing My Favourite Sport?”...

Most people think they’ll be able to return to their sport or exercise after a few days’ rest only to find when they do go back they’re still restricted. Sometimes their condition is worse than when they were first injured. Often when you rest there is little if any pain - but as soon as you start up again, the pain returns and regardless of the amount of rest improvement is minimal.

Sound Familiar?

Another common occurrence we see in our Physiotherapy Clinic is people who have seen their doctor, they receive the prescription of:

  • frown-o
    Rest
  • frown-o
    Wear a Support
  • frown-o
    Pain Medication
  • frown-o
    Come Back in 4 Weeks

Four weeks later they return with no relief, only to be told more rest, and a stronger prescription of meds.

The problem with sport injuries like hamstrings, ankle sprains, runner's knee etc., - complete rest is rarely the best advice.

It’s easy to become frustrated and confused because you’ve been told different things, by different people. Maybe you think you have a back problem - but it’s actually your hip causing the problem.

Sport injuries can be very confusing because more often than not, where the pain is coming from, isn’t actually the area that needs to be fixed and worked on and if you rest for too long, other parts of your body become just as, if not more problematic!

The confusion over “resting” often prevents people from seeking out the needed treatment to repair their injury and get back to their prior injury self. Worse, many people just give up, believing ‘they just have to accept their days of being active are over.

Sound Familiar?

If you are Currently Frustrated living with a sport Injury, here’s 7 more reasons why it could be lasting longer than it should:

  • frown-o
    1. You thought it would go away on its own - but it didn’t
  • frown-o
    2. You went to the Doctor who told you to rest, wear a support, and take painkillers - but the pills did nothing to help, and as soon as they wore off, your pain returned.
  • frown-o
    3. A family member or friend reminded you that everyone is more prone to Sport Injuries as they get older, so you just accepted it.
  • frown-o
    4. You have previously sought help from other Healthcare Professionals or a Physio, with little or no results.
  • frown-o
    5. You’ve tried using heat pads, ice, and sport supports but they’ve done nothing to help ease the pain or allow a return to your past abilities.
  • frown-o
    6. As instructed you rested for your pain, but it still irritates you daily.
  • frown-o
    7. Hoping for relief you’ve tried “sport massages” but the only result was, help with relaxing but little or nothing to fix your injury long term.

What Can I Do To Get Help with My Sports Injury?”...

Four things you can do:

  • meh-o
    1. First,  make the decision to get help. Procrastination is your enemy. Your pain is not going to disappear on its own. If anything lack of the right treatment will only make it worse. If your desire is to get back to your sport or exercise and start enjoying a pain free life you need to pick up the phone and make the call. We will be glad to listen and help find a solution.
  • meh-o
    2. Next, do the RIGHT exercises -  one of the best things to help you recover quickly and safely from an injury is to do the right series of progressed exercises - the right exercises given to you by a Physiotherapist will not only help reduce pain it will allow freedom of movement, a return to your sport or exercise plus ensure there is a maintenance program in place to prevent the injury reoccurring.
  • meh-o
    3. Avoid "too much rest" - while rest is an important part of the recovery process, too much rest won’t do anything to help you recover quickly. Many people believe that recovery means total rest from exercise. But in order for an injury to recover, blood flow is needed and rest prevents this. Good recovery and strengthening exercises to heal the injury, alongside hands-on treatment, will allow for a speedy recovery and you back to living your best life.
